How long to study for the SIE: hours, a six-week plan and when to book

Plan on 50 to 80 hours, or five to eight weeks at 10 hours a week. Section 2 is 44% of the exam, so give it the most time. Book a date early. Sit the exam once you score 80% on fresh, full-length, timed practice.

How long should you study for the SIE?

Plan on 50 to 80 hours of study for the SIE. That's where most prep companies' own figures fall. Knopman Marks recommends 50 to 70 hours, STC says 70 to 80, and Kaplan says at least 50. At 10 hours a week, that's five to eight weeks. With a finance background you may need less. If it's all new, plan for the top of the range.

ExamFX is the outlier. It recommends 85 to 110 hours. FINRA doesn't publish a recommended study time.

Achievable's own course data fits the same range. Its students studied a median of about 54 hours, over about two months.

Count hours, not weeks. Ten hours a week for six weeks and 15 hours a week for four both give you 60. If you work full time, keep the hours and stretch the weeks.

How many hours to study for the SIE, by background

STC puts it at 30 to 40 hours with a finance or business degree, and 60 to 80 or more if the material is new to you.

Test yourself before you pick a number. A degree is only a rough guide. The SIE also tests industry rules a finance degree may not cover, like account types and registration.

SIE study plan: a six-week schedule

A six-week plan at about 10 hours a week gives you 60 hours, near the middle of the range. It covers the four sections in the first four weeks. The last two weeks go to full-length, timed practice.

  1. Week 1: capital marketsTake the free diagnostic. Then study section 1: regulators, markets, the economy and new offerings. Start section 2 with stocks.
  2. Week 2: bonds and optionsSection 2 continues with corporate, government and municipal debt. Then move on to options.
  3. Week 3: funds and risksFinish section 2 with funds and other packaged products, then investment risks. Start section 3 with trading and settlement.
  4. Week 4: accounts and the rulesFinish section 3 with customer accounts and prohibited activities. Then cover section 4 and take your first full-length timed exam.
  5. Checkpoint: well short of 80%? Add a week or two, and move a booked date while it's still free.
  6. Week 5: fix the gapsReview every miss by section. Restudy your weakest areas, biggest sections first. End with a second timed mock.
  7. Week 6: final practiceOne more timed mock early in the week. Light review after that, then sit the SIE.

The plan follows the order of FINRA's outline. Trading and accounts in section 3 build on the products in section 2, so learn the products first.

Use questions you haven't seen for every timed mock. FINRA's free practice test can be one of them. It has 75 questions and no timer, so give yourself about 100 minutes.

Which SIE sections should you study most?

Spend the most time on section 2, products and their risks. It's 44% of the exam, about 33 of the 75 scored questions. Split your study hours in line with each section's weight.

Adjust the split in two ways:

  • Move hours toward your gaps. If the diagnostic shows a weak section, take time from your strongest one. Keep section 2 the biggest block.
  • Don't skip section 4. Seven questions is about one in ten. Four hours covers it in this plan.

Our guide to the SIE exam lists what each section covers.

How to study for the SIE

Learn a topic, then test yourself on it the same day. Spend at least half of every session on practice questions, not rereading. Achievable says practice made up nearly 40 hours of its typical student's total.

  • Study most days. Short daily sessions keep the terms fresh from one topic to the next.
  • Review every miss. Write down why the right answer is right and why yours was tempting. That way you'll spot the trap when it comes back.
  • Use exam-level questions. Easy questions give you a high score that means little. Our free SIE practice test has 15 questions written to the real exam's standard.
  • Practice at exam pace. The SIE gives you about 79 seconds a question. Take every timed mock in one sitting.

How far ahead should you book the SIE?

Book a date for the end of your study plan as soon as you enroll. Sit the exam once you score 80% or more on fresh, full-length, timed practice. That's the standard in our SIE pass rate guide. If you're not there 10 business days before the date, move it for free.

Three points from FINRA shape the timing:

  • Book early. FINRA encourages candidates to book as far ahead as they can to get the date they want. A fixed date also keeps your plan on pace.
  • Move it free with 10 business days' notice. That's about two weeks. Closer in, a change costs $50. Within two business days, or if you don't show, it costs the full $100.
  • Test within 120 days. Your window opens the day after FINRA processes your enrollment. If it runs out, you must enroll again, and the fee isn't refunded.

In the six-week plan, book for the end of week 6. Your free-change deadline then falls at the end of week 4. Take your first full-length exam a day or two before it. Our SIE registration guide covers enrolling and booking step by step.

What to do the week before the SIE

Use the last week for one more timed mock, a review of your misses and test-day checks. Don't start new topics.

  • Early in the week: one last timed mock. Use fresh questions, the full 105 minutes and one sitting.
  • Midweek: fix your misses. Group them by section and restudy the topic behind each one. Start with sections 2 and 3. They hold three in four scored questions.
  • Two days out: check your setup and ID. For an online test, rerun ProProctor's system check on the computer you'll use, and clear your desk. Bring one valid government-issued ID with your photo and signature, in the exact name you booked under.
  • The day before: review lightly. Skim your notes on past misses and skip another full exam. Plan to check in 30 minutes before your start time.

If you'd rather follow one course, our SIE course covers the outline in 65 short video lessons. It adds 101 pages of summary notes, 247 practice questions and three full-length timed mocks. To compare it with other courses, see our guide to the best SIE exam prep.
