› SMA and buying power

The plain-English version

SMA, the Special Memorandum Account, is a line of credit, not cash. It records the highest historical excess equity and never decreases from market declines, only from use.

The trapA market decline never reduces SMA, and spending it raises the debit.

INCLUDED · QUESTION BANK

Heavy on the math and suitability scenarios, because that is where the exam puts its marks. Every answer option explained and the governing rule cited.

SERIES 7 · MARGIN · QUESTION 9 OF 14

BIt is reduced in proportion to the decline
CIt remains unchanged

Why: SMA records the high-water mark of excess equity. Market declines never reduce it; only using it does.

About the exam

What is the Series 7 exam?

The Series 7, formally the General Securities Representative Qualification Examination, is FINRA's flagship representative-level exam. Passing it qualifies you to solicit, purchase and sell nearly the full shelf of securities products: stocks, bonds, options, municipal securities, investment company products, variable annuities and more. It is the license behind most stockbroker and financial advisor roles at broker-dealers.

Unlike the SIE, you cannot simply sign up. A FINRA member firm must sponsor you, which normally means you are hired first and study on the firm's clock. The SIE exam is a co-requisite: you need both results to become registered, and most candidates pass the SIE before or soon after being hired.

How the Series 7 exam is structured

The exam has 125 scored multiple-choice questions with a 3 hour 45 minute limit and a passing score of 72. FINRA organizes it around four job functions, and the weighting is dramatic: function 3, providing customers with information and making suitable recommendations, carries 91 of the 125 questions. That is why our course runs product by product with suitability drilled throughout, rather than treating it as one chapter.

How hard is the Series 7 exam?

Its reputation comes from breadth, not depth. No single topic is graduate-level, but every product on the shelf is fair game, the options and margin math must be automatic, and suitability questions demand judgment, not memorization. Candidates who already hold the SIE typically need 2 to 3 months of consistent study. Short lessons, spaced practice and full-length timed mocks are what make the 225-minute sitting feel routine by exam day.
